This week I'm going to talk to you about ways to incorporate multimedia/technology into the classroom and their advantages. Technology can be used and is most effective when used to engage students in their learning. The following video is my Vlog for this topic.
Hi James, Thanks for sharing your views and ideas of tech integration. You mention that you teach in an area where not all students have access to tech. at home. This is so vastly different from where I am, as all my students have laptops. Do you feel your students are behind others in terms of their comfort with technology? Do most of them at least have access to some sort of smart phone device? Or, do you think you use it enough in class to help them stay up-to-date? I've heard and read about Socrative, but haven't used it yet. Did you find it took a long time to set up and teach to the kids, or is it a relatively quick process? Sorry I have so many questions. I'm just really intrigued - you have integrated so much technology for your students. I'm also interested in learning more about Aurasma (I think this is what you mentioned). It sounds really cool!
Socrative is quick and easy to use. The hardest part is having the students log in, since they don't all have a mobile device. I know several students in my district are not comfortable with technology and don't want to be. This area is ran off of bourbon and farmers. This is an area of old time farmers and they are raising their kids to be farmers too. Students have a tendency to drop out at 16 to work on the farms around here.

Aurasma is a longer process of setting up than Socrative. You choose an image to be your target image. Target image is used by the app to display your augmented reality video that plays over this target image by use of the app and a mobile devices camera. You set up a channel that your students join. You channel will have preloaded target images that when a student hovers over the image will then play your media that you set up with that target image. I normally film with a document camera a sample problem then place that with an image. I do have a few posters around the room that come to life with me showing them exactly how to use the machines in the classroom, shop, and lab.
